The message is that Scotland is getting–tougher on Drink Drug Driving http://www.dontriskit.info/drink-driving

T A X I - Calling all taxi drivers in Fife

Fife Road Safety Unit in partnership with Fife Council Regulation and Licensing Committee have put together a Course drivers applying for a taxi licence. The course gives information on safe driving, including the rules of the road along with the responsibilities of a taxi driver.

The objectives behind the Course were, to reduce the amount of taxi drivers who appear in front of the Licensing committee for misdemeanours, to encourage taxi drivers to look at their work in a more professional manner, and as Fife is visited by many tourists, to see themselves as "Fife ambassadors".

The Course is held once a month at Fife Constabulary Headquarters. Presentations are given by Fife road safety professionals from Police Safety Camera Partnership and Fife local authority. The course lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and participants receive an Attendance Certificate and road safety materials.

In the 12 months since the introduction of this course there has been a considerable reduction in numbers appearing before the Licensing Committee and the feedback from participants is very favourable. This has now become part of the application for a taxi licence in Fife. To date 466 applicants have attended. RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND UPDATES

RoSPA / BNFL Scholarship Scheme sponsorship.
To Save Lives and Reduce Injuries

Background

In 2009 British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) endowed Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) with a special fund to finance a scholarship scheme over the next ten years to enable students; 'to carry out research into safety and accident prevention that will produce defined, practical and influential outcomes to help save lives and prevent injuries

2010 Road Safety Winner

RoSPA BNFLThe 2010 RoSPA / BNFL Scholarships Award winners have just been announced and include a road safety study into the “Perceptual judgements by elderly road users when observing vehicle approach”. This project will be undertaken by Professor John Wann and Dr Damian Poulter Action Research Laboratory, Royal Holloway, University of London.

2009 Road Safety Project Update

One of the 2009 sponsorship winners, Keele University, has provided the following update on a process evaluation of a young driver coaching programme being undertaken in Staffordshire County Council.

“The evaluation of the Staffordshire Young Driver Coaching Programme for learner drivers is on-going and is indicating key lessons for local authorities engaged in young driver road safety training.

The research highlights the links between a good resource, participation in it by the intended beneficiaries, and desired outcomes. Early findings suggest best practice for ADI’s wanting to improve involvement by parents in the learning to drive process, as parents are found to occupy a more distant role in the learning team. The research also offers insight into young adult-parent relationships, and the difference between learning to drive and attaining licensure.

It is expected that the final report will be of interest to road safety education, training and publicity practitioners; supervising drivers and learner drivers; ADI’s; and prospective evaluators alike.”
